How the PhD Excellence Program sparked DeltaSpark

DeltaSpark started with a conversation between two PhD students at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Luc Bondaz and Suhas Nuggehalli Sampathkumar.
They met through the PhD Excellence Program, an initiative at EPFL that brings together doctoral students to develop leadership, communication, and collaboration skills beyond their research. The program includes workshops, group challenges, and opportunities to work with students from different scientific fields. During these activities, Luc and Suhas realized their skills and ways of thinking complemented each other very well. What started as discussions about research soon turned into conversations about building something bigger together. They began exploring the idea that CO₂ could be treated not only as a waste product but also as a valuable resource.
With support from EPFL’s innovation and startup ecosystem, the idea gradually evolved into a real company. That’s how DeltaSpark was born, with the goal of helping industries turn emissions into valuable resources.
